Kim and I went to the San Francisco Symphony this last weekend (Already 2006, yikes!) They played Tchaicovsky's 4th Symphony, which was absolutely fantastic. There is just nothing to beat a live Symphony performance.
That being said, what is with all the coughers? It seemed particularly bad at this concert, a Sunday matinee. Perhaps the matinee crowds are more infirm, or less disciplined? In any event, the coughing in the concert followed some very interesting patterns:
- Coughing always seemed to be in spurts.
- Coughing seemed to be more prevelant in the "cheap seats" than the orchestra(high end) seats.
- Kim and I did not cough once between us.
- Not a single orchestra member coughed during the entire concert.
Clearly, coughing is primarily a psychological, not a biological, function. It seems to me there are some interesting studies on human beings waiting to be done on coughing at orchestra concerts (what kinds of people cough? Income/sex/race/seating arrangement/age/frequency of symphony attendance/etc). Anyone up for an interesting doctoral thesis?
